Timothy Mason Roberts, author of the book titled “This Infernal War” will be the guest speaker.
Roberts is a history professor at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. His book “This Infernal War” is an excellent look at life in Lewistown during the Civil War. The book is a compilation of the letters between soldier William Standard and his wife Jane. While there are records of other correspondence with families during the Civil War the letters of the Standards are unique because they feature letters from both the husband and the wife. The preservation of these letters is possible only because Mr. Standard returend his wife’s correspondence to her when he wrote home. “This Infernal War” presents a clear picture of how our local populace thought about the Civil War and the suffering of those family members left behind in the Lewistown Community.
