John James Audubon’s vibrant, life-size images for The Birds of America are considered a masterpiece of early American art. They continue to this day to be a standard of comparison for bird illustrators. Who was Audubon and what makes his project so important?
Illinois State Museum’s Curator of Art Douglas Stapleton will answer these questions in this Gallery Talk. The presentation will include a brief overview of Audubon in his time, his predecessors, his competition, and the trials and tribulation of bringing his project to life in mid-19th Century America. Audubon, a naturalist, artists, hunter, showman, and conservationist, was a maverick in his day whose legacy has come mean the very heart of bird conservation.
Visitors may enjoy this program and viewing the latest temporary exhibit at Dickson Mounds. Registration is not required. Light refreshments will be served.
